Stern Warning by Nazri

The incompetent and apple polishing minister, who thinks himself as the saviour of Malaysian legal system and Malay rights, did give little respect to a statesmen who was involved in politics and social service, longer than he had lived in this planet.

Its a shame Dato Seri Samy Velu keeping quite on this matter and being mild on Devamany's issue. Dato Seri should slap this ''apple polishing'' minister or at least ensure he is suspended from parliament just like what happen to Dato Sothinathan.

Below is his remarks on the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

KUALA LUMPUR:

Stay out of the controversy involving the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) – that’s the stern message for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who rebuked Karunanidhi for interfering, said what happened here had “nothing to do with Tamil Nadu.”

”Do not meddle in our affairs. This is Malaysia, not Tamil Nadu ... lay off,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday, when asked about wire reports that Karunanidhi had written to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to take immediate and appropriate action to end the “sufferings and bad treatment” of Tamils in Malaysia.

Nazri said he would not apologise for calling those who participated in the Hindraf rally on Sunday “penyangak” (thugs), stressing that the demonstrators had violated the law as no permit was issued.

He explained that it was illogical to assume that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi would not accept their memorandum.

“I cannot accept the action of 20,000 people who want to be involved in a simple action of submitting a memorandum. They can send one person or even 10. The question is – are they really sincere in highlighting their grievances, or are they trying to create chaos?

“It’s a mistake to make an apology to them. It’s not the Indian community that’s involved. Don’t be samseng (gangster),” he said, adding that the issue was discussed at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting.

Nazri said police would probe a petition to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, which stated that a genocide would occur here with the Indian community being forced into violence like in Sri Lanka if their “cause” was ignored.

“The Attorney-General’s Chambers will study who sent the petition and charge the writer for sedition. The Hindraf memorandum is also a matter of concern because its contents are seditious,” he added.

“I’m sure these matters will also create animosity between the Indians, the Malays and the Government. We will take action. These people must be responsible for their actions.”
Nazri also reiterated Abdullah’s warning that the Internal Security Act would be used if the situation warranted it.

“Don’t challenge the Government. They can try and hold a rally again and see what will happen,” he added. "The authorities were accused of excessive action. Look at France, whose police used tear gas and even rubber bullets when a demonstration occurred there.”
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed support for most of the demands made by Hindraf.

He told reporters yesterday that he turned up at the Klang Sessions Court on Saturday to give moral support to lawyers P. Uthayakumar, Waythamoorthy and V.S. Ganapathi Rao.
Anwar said he had advised Hindraf not to use Article 153 of the Federal Constitution to pursue their demands as it involved the rights and privileges of the Malays and other indigenous local folk.

In a separate press conference, Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang urged Nazri to apologise unconditionally for labelling the demonstrators “penyangak.”

Hindraf's memorandum to Gordon Brown

The is the Hindraf's memorandum to Gordon Brown, appealing to the British PM to refer Malaysia to the World Court and the International Criminal Court.
I hope Mr Uthayakumar braves on in his cause and not seek asylum again, as he did a few years ago, when the going gets tough.

Dear Sirs,

RE: 1. COMMONWEALTH ETHNIC INDIAN PEACE LOVING SUBJECTS IN MALAYSIA PERSECUTED BY GOVERNMENT BACKED ISLAMIC EXTREMIST VIOLENT ARMED TERRORIST WHO LAUNCHED A PRE DAWN VIOLENT ARMED ATTACK AND DESTROYED THE KG JAWA MARIAMAN HINDU TEMPLE AT 4.00 A.M THIS MORNING (15.11.2007).

2. APPEAL FOR U.K TO MOVE EMERGENCY U.N RESOLUTION CONDEMNING “ETHNIC CLEANSING” IN MALAYSIA.

3. APPEAL TO REFER MALAYSIA TO THE WORLD COURT AND INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT FOR CRIMES AGAINST IT’S OWN ETHNIC MINORITY INDIANS.

We refer to the above critical matters in Malaysia but which generally gets the least attention locally even by the Opposition parties, NGO’s, the Malaysian Human Rights Commission and the media for this community is generally regarded as politically insignificant, do not draw local or international funding and are deemed not pressworthy. To the contrary the Malaysian government has successfully projected itself to the world as a modern Islamic thinking country which is not true.

The ethnic minority Indians in Malaysia were brought in to Malaysia by the British some 200 over years ago. Since independence in 1957 the Malaysian Indians have been permanently colonialised by the Islamic fundamentalist and Malay chauvinists UMNO led Malaysian government.

Among the recent atrocities committed by this government are as follows:-

1.100 over Indians were slashed and killed by the UMNO controlled Malaysian government in the Kampung Medan mini genocide. Despite numerous appeals, the Malaysian Human Rights Commission has refused to hold a Public Inquiry. The UMNO controlled Malaysian courts struck off a victim’s public interest civil suit for a Public Inquiry to be held without even the said UMNO controlled government having to file in their defence. The UMNO controlled Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police refused to investigate and / or initiate an inquest into the death of at least six Indians in this tragedy despite.

2. Every week one person at average is killed in a shot to kill policy and in every 2 weeks one person is killed in police custody. About 60% of these victims are Indians though they form only 8% of the Malaysian population.

3. In every three weeks one Hindu temple is demolished in Malaysia.

The latest being the demolishment of the Mariaman temple in Padang Jawa, Shah Alam, Selangor early this morning (15.11.2007) and the next being the (Mutaiya) Hindu temple in Sungai Petani scheduled for the 29.11.2007.

A violent armed pre down attack at 4.00a.m this morning was launched by the UMNO controlled Malaysian government backed by about 600 police, riot police, Islamic extremist and armed terrorists which completely destroyed this temple.

In an attack two weeks ago, uniformed police, riot police and city Council officers hurled rocks and attacked unarmed Hindu devotees with knives, sticks and iron rods.

At least 20 Hindu devotees were seriously injured and 19 arrested including 4 of their United Kingdom trained lawyers in direct violation of Article 5 (Right to life) Article 8 (Equality) Article 11 (Freedom of Religion) Section 295 (defiling a place of worship), Section 296 (disturbing a religious assembly), 298A(causing racial disharmony) and Section 441(criminal trespass) of the Malaysian Penal Code.

These authorities are plagued by an above the law mindset and in fact liberally take the law into their own hands. These atrocities however does not happen to almost all Islamic places of worship. Please visit www.policewatchmalaysia.com for further and better particulars.

4. State sponsored direct discrimination against the Indians in Public University intakes, Indian (Tamil) Schools, skills training institutes, civil service and private sector job opportunities, business and license opportunities and in almost all other aspects of daily life.

Despite our hundreds of letters, appeals and pleas to the Malaysian King and Sultans, the Prime Minister, Attorney General, Inspector General of Police, Ministers, Chief Ministers and the latest being our letters to the Prime Minister dated 29.10.2007 and 30.10.2007 and to the Attorney General dated 1.11.2007 the Malaysian authorities are only proceeding with greater ferocity and with impunity with very little regard for the Federal Constitution and laws of Malaysia. So please help us.

CONCLUSION

We fear that this peace loving Indian community of Tamil origin having been pushed to the corner and the persecution getting worse by the day may be forced to into terrorism in a matter of time as what has happened to the Sri Lankan Tamils.

APPEAL

On our part we are committed to a peaceful and lawful struggle and pray and appeal that the Government of the United Kingdom:-

1. Moves an emergency United Nations resolution condemning these state sponsored atrocities and persecutions of Malaysian Indians in Malaysia.

2. Refers Malaysia to the World Court and the International Criminal Court for Crimes against it’s own ethnic minority Indians

Thank You,

Yours Faithfully

Britain Sued Over Malaysian Indians' Woes

An ethnic Indian in Malaysia is using an audacious strategy to highlight the plight of his mostly impoverished community by suing Britain, the country's former colonial ruler, for $4 trillion.

The Malaysian government dismisses the case as baseless, but lawyer Waytha Moorthy is determined to pursue it, even vowing to appeal to Britain's Queen Elizabeth to appoint lawyers for the Indian community, which he says is too poor to find its own.

Moorthy wants Britain to pay damages of 1 million sterling [$2.06 million] to each of Malaysia's two million ethnic Indians for rights abuses he traces to colonial-era labour schemes that brought their ancestors to Malaysia as indentured workers.

Compensation
"We are seeking compensation because we were permanently colonised during British rule, and now, under the government of the ethnic Malays," Moorthy said.

"We have lost touch with our roots and have been suppressed so far," said Moorthy, who accuses British officials of failing to honour their responsibility to protect ethnic Indians when they granted independence to Malaysia in 1957.

In colonial times, many impoverished Indians and Chinese flocked to work and settle in Malaysia, drawn by government schemes meant to attract cheap labour for the country's then lucrative rubber estates and tin mines, he added. But the episode highlights a very real dilemma: after 50 years of independence, ethnic Indians, most of whom are Hindu, own just 1.5 per cent of the country's national wealth. (Gulf News)

***** Our pemimpin2 in Umno must be pretty cheesed off by this gutsy (and perhaps a little reckless) lawyer Waytha Moorthy. That Umno pimp at Utusan Malaysia, Awang Selamat, apart from bisik bisiking, has also been spitting his racist venom at the likes of Waytha Moorthy for highlighting internationally the issue of race discrimination in Malaysia. I wonder where Awang Selamat and like-minded ethnoracists trace their roots to, Indonesia or Yunnan Province? Or perhaps he would prefer to be associated with some tiny village near the Arabian Sea? It might add a little credibility to the rubbish he spews out on a daily basis.

Results of the FAM's 44 congress

Pahang Sultan Retains FAM Presidency, Khairy Among Five New Faces In Council

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang was returned as president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) at the council's elections today which saw Umno Youth Deputy Chief Khairy Jamaluddin among the five new faces voted in for the 2007-2010 term.

Khairy, who initiated the MyTeam reality TV show which developed into a serious endeavour, was elected unopposed as one of the two deputy presidents. He takes over the slot vacated in July by the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The other post of deputy president was retained by incumbent Datuk Redzuan Sheikh Ahmad who was returned unopposed.

The other four new faces are the vice-presidents -- Datuk Che Mat Jusoh (president of the Terengganu Football Association), Affandi Hamzah (vice-president of the Kelantan Football Association), Ahmad Mohamad (deputy president of the Johor Football Association) and Datuk Gulzar Mohamad (council member of the Sarawak Football Association).

Incumbent Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar of Perak lost in the elections for the posts of vice-president. He garnered only 24 votes. Che Mat drew 45 votes, Affandi 30, Ahmad 28 and Gulzar 26.

Another incumbent vice-president Datuk Anifah Aman gave up the post in keeping with a recent directive from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi prohibiting ministers, deputy ministers and parliamentary secretaries from holding positions in sports associations. Anifah is the Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities.

Meanwhile, Che Mat is tipped to take over as chairman of the FAM Local Competitions Committee, a post hitherto held by Raja Ahmad Zainuddin.

Sultan Ahmad Shah expressed confidence that the new line-up of office-bearers would help inspire excellence in the standard of football in the country.

"I thank the congress for their trust in me and retaining me as the president. The new executive committee will attempt to lift the standard of football to a new level.
"I also extend my congratulations to those who have been elected. I hope they will work hard to raise the standard of football in the country," said the sultan, who has been returned as president since 1984.

The FAM president appoints the association's general secretary.
Replying to a question, Sultan Ahmad Shah said the next FAM Council meeting would discuss the appointment of a candidate to that post.

Khairy, 32, the youngest FAM deputy president to date, said the new executive committee would require some time to rectify weaknesses before it sets out to improve the image of the sport."Local football fans must not anticipate an overnight change. We need some time to set things right.

"Furthermore, the most obvious weakness is communication at the grassroots, between the state associations and the FAM," he told reporters at the Menara Kuala Lumpur where the FAM's 44th annual congress was held.

Tourism Varsity For Balik Pulau

An Interesting article taken from Bernama:

PENANG, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- A Tourism University is being planned at Balik Pulau to provide skilled workforce to meet the growth of the country's tourism industry as well as boost development of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

Finance Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had approved the project and an announcement on the matter would be made soon.

"The university will be built to train the workforce needed in the tourism industry in our efforts to provide the quality service to tourists.

"It will offer courses related to the travel industry like hotel and catering, service, transportation, etc, " he told reporters after the opening of the Balik Pulau Umno divisional delegates meeting here today.

He said infrastructure at Balik Pulau would be developed and upgraded and they included the construction of road network to link the second Penang bridge to Balik Pulau.

"The RM200 million road network will link Batu Maung to Bayan Lepas, Bayan Lepas to Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau, as well as Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau," he added.

-- BERNAMA

Who will be the first batch of this university. Penang with its rich heritage, have not be able to shine under CM Koh. Probably CM Koh, Tengku Adnan, and that Tourism Madam from Penang should attend this university first.

Government's Ignorance

An Open Letter to Dato Lee Hwa Beng:

RE: No LRT Stops at 3 busy spots.....

Dear Dato,

As today's news carried the message from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB) that the proposed 3 important LRT spots have been ignored by them. Its is also from the news that they have yet to present the new routes, to the cabinet and I would like to suggest that we should take this opportunity to start a ''signature campaign'', to inform SPNB as well as the Finance Ministry, which is headed by the Prime Minister himself.

Out of the 3 stops, USJ 1 station is very crucial, as there are 10 blocks of apartment and if I may be right there is an alternative road due to be opened to Puchong. The residents Committe (JKP) Zone 5 Chairman, En. Kamarudin Rasol himself echoed the residents sentiment that they are dissapointed by the SPNB's decision.

They were also looking forward to use the LRT to work, thus leaving their car at home and not contributing towards the notorious peak hour traffic jam at summit area and polluting the environment. A noble intention which have to be cut short if the proposal does not go through.

It would be unacceptable if SPNB pronounce that cost is the utmost reason for them to have shelved that particular station., with an estimated residents of more than 50,000 ( taking into account the residents from USJ 8,14,9 and Taipan) expected to use this station, one will be in for a shocker, if the USJ 1 station is not built as proposed. To SPNB, you can recover the cost with ease, after all the fares are not going to be cheap.

Planning have not been the virtue of Malaysia government, this can be justified by the announcement of another LCCT Terminal, why didn't they forsee this situation, similarly, the LRT trains pass the area but NO STATION. How can one decribe this.!!!

Enough said.

I would like Dato Lee, to come up with some magical ideas which will greatly influence the minds of Finance Ministry as well as SPNB.If you need manpower to go around and collect signatures, I am more than willing to spare my time.

Regards
Navalan

Ten Things We Could All Change Today

1) Switch your electricity supply to a renewable energy provider like Good Energy (http://www.good-energy.co.uk/) or Ecotricity (http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/). They will generate electricity using wind turbines, solar panel, water turbines and gas from food or animal waste.

2) Change your light bulbs to energy-saving ones. Switch off unused electrical appliances. NB An estimated 8% of the UK’s carbon emissions are caused by appliances left on stand-by.

3) Install draught exclusion measures around doors and windows, lag your boiler, and consider getting cavity wall and loft insulation.

4) Use a compost bin for your garden and kitchen waste. If you have a balcony, then consider buying a wormery (http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/). A wormery can take dairy products and cooked food; a compost heap can’t. NB Food represents about 30% of household waste and half of that is perfectly edible when it’s thrown away!

5) Stop buying milk in tetrapacks, purepaks & plastic bottles. Use your local milkman who delivers and recycles glass bottles.

6) Refuse plastic bags in shops and leave excess packaging at the till. Keep spare bags or “bags for life” by the front door to take shopping.

7) Try to carry a travel mug or a plastic water bottle with you rather than using disposable cups or buying water bottles. Take plastic water bottles home when you do buy them and re-use them.

8) Don’t run the tap when brushing your teeth. Stop the shower when you’re soaping up. Put a hippo or a brick in your toilet cistern to reduce water use. Install a grey water diverter to channel waste water from your bathroom to your garden.

9) Try to buy local, seasonal and, if possible, organic food. Don’t buy air-freighted fresh food. Best of all sign up for an organic box scheme like Abel & Cole (http://www.abel-cole.co.uk/) or Riverford Farm (http://www.riverford.co.uk/). Eat less meat because producing it is such an energy-intensive business. NB Seeds and nuts will give you all the protein you need.

10) Buy a bicycle. Sell your car and join a car club (www.mystreetcar.co.uk, www.whizzgo.co.uk, www.citycarclub.co.uk). Pay an environmental charity like Pure (http://www.puretrust.org.uk/) or Climate Care (http://www.climatecare.org/) to offset the carbon for any flights you take. They will invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

The Man Behind the Scene

Wow, what a splendid two weeks it has been for me. Angkor Wat is simply awesome, couldn't say more than that. Its a pity that it did not make it into the last 7 of the New 7 Wonders of the World. I must admit, I do not agree to the final 7 selected by the internet users, however its always the case of majority wins.

While I was on the look out for some interesting job vacancy ( I'm dreaming of landing a CEO type status) one article changed my mind that I should be happy at where I am and what I am doing.

Sounds confusing......read on article from a UK newspaper written by Joe Studwell

A tale of money, massage and golf -Asia’s business godfathers

THEY are a small and secretive group of men, largely unknown outside southeast Asia, who exercise immense political influence and enormous economic clout. They are Asia’s godfathers – business tycoons whose routines revolve round golf, massage and, above all, money.
The interests of these moguls, whose dynasties often date from the 19th century, can cover anything from banking and property to shipping, gambling and timber.

In western management terms, godfathers are commonly perceived as chief executives. But in reality their activities are more like those of supercharged chairmen – setting strategy, making deals, hobnobbing, but ultimately leaving others to execute the substance as well as the detail of what they put in train.

Godfathers, and their immediate support staff, spend inordinate amounts of time making sure photographs of the tycoons with ascendant politicians are on display in their offices (and that images of out-of-favour politicians are taken down). Godfathers’ homes, yachts and hotels are placed at the disposal of people who need to be ingratiated; the problems of politicians’ wayward children are quietly attended to; and generous gifts are discreetly sent around the world.

Golf is the base ingredient of this social-business mix. Almost without exception, godfathers play the game. In Hong Kong, for instance, the top tycoons – Li Ka-shing, Robert Kuok, the Kwok brothers (Walter, Raymond and Thomas), Lee Shau-kee, Cheng Yu-tung – are all long-time players and several of them own courses (over the border in mainland China) where they can play host to their guests in private.

Asian dictators, too, have been big golf aficionados. Indonesia’s President Suharto played weekly, while Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines claimed to have the lowest handicap of any world leader (though his bodyguards were accused of kicking his mis-hit shots out of the rough).
Golf, more than any other activity, is the social lubricant of Asian big business. As a result, it is part of work. As is attending weddings and funerals of business associates and politicians – what Hong Kongers dub “doing red and white”: red being the colour of Chinese weddings, white that of funerals. As is conducting business while eating and throwing endless parties and receptions.
The average godfather day is consequently long but social. On a typical day for Li Ka-shing, Asia’s richest tycoon, he will be up before 6am and off down the hill from his home on Deep Water Bay Road to the nine-hole course in time for a tee-off before 7am.

He might play with one or more of the other billionaires who have homes close to the Hong Kong Golf Club, with one of his senior executives, or with a new business contact he wants to size up. Li arrives at the office at 10am. This is at the top of the 70-storey Cheung Kong Centre and has a swimming pool with a retracting roof.

Li’s first job is to check the press for anything that relates to himself or his companies. He speaks English, but prefers to read Chinese, so relevant parts of the English-language papers are translated before his arrival. Li also pays close attention to what brokerage reports say about his firms. Those who provoke his ire can expect a call from one of Li’s lieutenants or a letter from his lawyers. Li has frequently withheld advertising from newspapers that upset him.
When papers and correspondence have been dealt with, Li might pick up the phone and speak with one or more senior managers. At 11.30am, Li is ready for a massage. Thereafter, there is time for further administrative tasks before a 1pm lunch, inevitably of the working variety. After lunch, Li puts in another couple of hours before heading home at 4pm. At 5pm he will more than likely take another massage and then, perhaps, a game of cards with business associates at 6.30pm. Finally, there will be a business dinner before he retires at 10pm.

Since everything counts as work, Li and other godfathers can claim to put in 16-hour days. But the task of actually running their businesses, and putting the deals agreed over golf into practice, falls to their managers. There are many of these, but in most tycoon businesses there is a clearly identifiable person who might be called “the chief slave”.

In Li’s case it is Canning Fok, the somewhat overweight executive with a greying, pudding-bowl haircut who can occasionally be seen in public handing Li a mobile phone with both hands – the ingratiating Asian gesture normally reserved for name cards.

Fok undertakes tasks great and small. On the one hand he has overseen the investment of more than $20 billion (£10 billion) in Li’s third-generation mobile telephony business. On the other, it can fall to him to bawl out investment analysts who have put a sell call on a Li company.

Paul Mackenzie, a long-time analyst at the CLSA brokerage firm who has had the Fok treatment, marvels that Fok can find the time. “You would think Canning Fok had better things to do,” he said.

The job of the chief slave is to follow the boss’s whim and act as his enforcer. Fok is prone to bullying. One source recalls listening to Fok talk about a business deal over lunch, before Li’s man said: “They are going to play ball on this and, if they don’t, we will crush them.” It really was, the source said, “like a scene from The Godfather”.

The chief slave is the one who puts in the hard hours. They are well-remunerated – Fok may be the best-paid executive outside America, earning about $15m a year – but they do nothing but serve and obey their master, every day. Fok is rarely in bed before 2am and back in the office hours before Li.

The chief slave of Lee Shau-kee, Li’s closest rival in wealth in Hong Kong, is Henderson Land vice-chairman Colin Lam. Lam owns, by Hong Kong standards, an enormous house in the territory’s Repulse Bay. But he almost never gets to live there because he spends most nights in a flat he owns on May Road on the other side of Hong Kong island. The reason he does this is to be closer to his boss, who might summon him at any moment. Indeed, serious physical impairment through overwork is a common hazard of the chief-slave position.

Malaysian tycoon Ananda Krishnan’s über-lackey, ethnic Indian Ralph Marshall, soldiers on despite major heart surgery in recent years. An investment banker who knows Krishnan describes his treatment of Marshall as that of “serial bully”. As a typical example, the source recalls Krishnan in Europe deciding to telephone Marshall over the most trivial matter. On being reminded that it was 3am in Kuala Lumpur, Krishnan responded that this was unimportant and made the call to the sleeping aide. When Marshall himself tells the author, “I’m just an office boy”, he is only half joking.

Robert Kuok’s chief slave Richard Liu, who was on occasion reduced to tears by the stress of his work, dropped dead at Kuala Lumpur International airport on Chinese New Year’s day 2002. Liu’s death forced Kuok back into day-to-day management.

Those closely acquainted with chief-slave characters say it is not just their salaries, but power and proximity to the godfather that motivates them. The frisson of power is that much greater than in an impersonal multinational business, particularly since the tycoons’ position is bound up with their political access and favour. Ultimately, however, the chief slave’s status is a mirage. He may receive share options, but control of the business will never pass to him; rather it will go to the next generation of the tycoon’s family.

The chief slave is, almost by definition, Asian. He is from the same ethnic group as the tycoon, able to speak the same languages and interact fully with the family.

Another stock character in the modern godfather management cadre stands in stark contrast. This is the ethnic outsider, often a European or an American. There is a certain historical symmetry in the retention of such people. In the colonial era, western banks and trading houses depended on “compradors” to act as intermediaries when doing business with the local population.

It was an enormously profitable position, pregnant with possibilities for bribes as well as legitimate commissions. Casino magnate Stanley Ho’s great uncle, Sir Robert Ho Tung, was the greatest comprador of them all (for Jardine Matheson) and the first Chinese allowed to live on Hong Kong’s Peak.

The contemporary godfather is nothing like so dependent on outsiders – he is far more cosmopolitan, often having studied abroad – yet the outsider is still an important component of big business success. He may be required for some specialist, technical ability or to overcome the political problems that go with family business.

In the late 19th century, tycoons like Indonesia’s Oei Tiong Ham were already employing European engineers to help them run imported machinery. But after independence, the godfathers’ needs became more complex. Suddenly they were the ones in league with political power, holding exclusive licences and in a position to buy out or muscle out old colonial commercial interests.

As their power grew, they needed to know about global markets and global capital. In this context the stage was set for the rise of what might be called the “gweilo” running dog (gweilo, from the Cantonese meaning “ghost man”, is a common euphemism in the region for a foreigner; running dog comes from the Mandarin Chinese zou gou, meaning a servile follower). Some of the godfathers’ running dogs brought nothing more than management ability; others were, and are, less wholesome characters ready to engage in all manner of unseemly activities.

Rodney Ward, the seasoned head of the Swiss investment bank UBS in Asia, suggests that with respect to unprincipled business in the postindependence era: “The gweilos led the way not only in terms of degree of avarice but also in denying it had anything to do with them.”

As the imperial order crumbled, it was only natural that southeast Asia’s ascendant godfathers would find foreign talent at their disposal. The only limit to the advantage that could be gained from hiring from a multi-ethnic talent pool was a tycoon’s capacity to trust outsiders. In most cases this proved a constraint. Family-based businesses were naturally suspicious of outsiders, and particularly gweilos.

After all, the average tycoon had a lot of secrets that needed keeping. But one godfather, more than all others, realised that a well-paid gweilo was just as trustworthy as an Asian. That tycoon was Li Ka-shing, who became the ultimate employer of the gweilo running dog. As Simon Murray, who ran Hutchison for Li for a decade, observes: “KS is totally nonracist. He looks at people and sees the value.”

Compared with multinational companies, the godfathers’ management systems are few and arcane. What matters is the will of the Big Boss. At the heart of every tycoon business is a battery of secretaries, a chief slave and a phalanx of nervous executives awaiting the next instruction of one unpredictable individual.

PROMINENT GODFATHERS

Li Ka-shing (Hong Kong) Born in 1928, Li was catapulted into the top rank of tycoons when he bought the former British trading house Hutchison Whampoa from Hongkong Bank. Li built on Hutchison’s dominant positions in the local port-handling and retail cartels, and acquired Hongkong Electric. He made a $15 billion profit when he sold his Orange mobile-phone business to Germany’s Mannesmann.

Lee Shau-kee (Hong Kong) Lee was born in 1928 in China’s Guangdong province, the son of a wealthy banker and gold trader. He was one of the founders of the Sun Hung Kai property empire. In 1976, he broke out on his own, establishing Henderson Land, of which he now holds 68%. He controls other real-estate companies, as well as Hong Kong’s main gas supplier and Miramar hotels.

Stanley Ho (Hong Kong) Casino magnate Stanley Ho is a great nephew of Hong Kong’s original Eurasian godfather, Sir Robert Ho Tung. Stanley made his first fortune during the second world war smuggling goods across the Chinese border from neutral Macau. In 1962 his consortium won the Macau gaming monopoly. Ho modernised and expanded the casino business and built a group encompassing hotels and sea and air transport. He has had four wives and fathered at least 17 children.

Thaksin Shinawatra (Thailand) A former policeman, Thaksin made a fortune out of mobile-phone, broadcasting and other telecommunications services. He went into national politics and was swept to power on a populist agenda in 2001. Ousted last year by a military coup, he now faces corruption charges. He announced last Friday he had bought Manchester City football club.

Robert Kuok Hock Nian (Malaysia) Kuok was born in 1923 in Johore and built up his business through commodity trading and import substitution deals. In the 1970s he became known as the “sugar king” but diversified into other commodities such as flour and palm oil, as well as shipping, property and financial services.

The Lims (Malaysia) Lim Goh Tong made money trading war-surplus equipment after the second world war. After independence in 1957, he obtained the only casino licence in Malaysia and built the vast Genting Highlands resort outside Kuala Lumpur. Other Lim interests include plantations, property and electricity generation. His son, Lim Kok Thay, now runs the family business and has used his gambling profits to expand into cruise lines.

Mohammad “Bob” Hasan (Indonesia) Hasan was the closest confidant of President Suharto and amassed huge logging concessions. When Indonesia banned the export of raw logs in 1981, Hasan diversified into shipping, property, banking and held many companies in tandem with Suharto family members.

The Tans (Philippines) Lucio Tan, a Chinese immigrant, was catapulted into the big time by President Ferdinand Marcos. He came to dominate the tobacco industry, was handed control of a major bank and was allowed to open Asia Brewery to compete with the San Miguel beer monopoly. Several younger brothers work with him. In 2000, he became the biggest shareholder in Philippine National Bank (PNB).

The Zobel de Ayalas (Philippines) This dynasty – the oldest in the Philippines – derived from the union of the Zobels and the Ayalas in the 19th century. Since the second world war, the Zobel de Ayalas have transformed their Makati hacienda into the financial district of Manila, and diversified into banking, hotels, telecommunications and manufacturing.

Mr.Blair's Final Words

Mr Blair makes his departing statement:

"I have never pretended to be the greatest House of Commons man but I can pay the house the greatest compliment I can by saying that from the first until the last I have never stopped fearing it. The tingling apprehension I felt at three minutes to 12 today I felt as much 10 years ago and every bit as accute. It is in that fear that respect is retained.

"Some may belittle politics but we know it is where people stand tall. And although I know it has its many harsh contentions, it is still the arena which sets the heart beating fast. It may sometimes be a place of low skullduggery but it is more often a place for more noble causes. I wish everyone, friend or foe, well and that is that, the end."

We need the service.....badly

I have been reading articles about the impending arrival of LRT service in our USJ area. There was one reader who went on to say that its better to invest on more buses than LRT services, right after that Rapid KL changed its routes from 3 local services to 2 Utama services, leaving T523 to circulated around 1/3 of USJ.

I am aware the majority of USJ folks have their own transport, however there are those who would prefer to have LRT service being extended to USJ area and ideally it should be supplemented by the Rapid KL service. Mr.Lee Hwa Beng, have expressed his views and comments in numerous occasions and today he even advocated on the importance of having LRT lines in USJ.

I am 100% supportive and do agree with him - I, we and USJ needs LRT services badly
One has to look at the traffic conditions during peak hours, especially at the SS16 traffic light(after office hours)., cars from lane no.3 takes a right turn instead of going straight towards Carrefour.

Cars from SS16 going downwards to SS19 and USJ housing estate, its a nightmare. Cars from KL entering USJ, there's a long queue which stretch way up to 500 meters long and its 1 kilometres if its raining and I wonder why they love to built bottle neck, 3 lanes becoming 2 lanes...trust me it only happens in Malaysia, Mr.Lee went to London recently, can he tell me at which junction did he spot a chaotic situation like this one over in London.

In order to put a stop for all this we badly need LRT service.

However, having supported Mr.Lee, I strongly disagree with his choice of LRT stations which goes through in what seems to be places which he has an affection, though I must admit being an accountant myself the population around SS15, SS13, Taipan and finally USJ 1 is cost effective, but that should noy be the only criteria, as:-

1. Why end the station at USJ 21....why not extend until Putra Heights? ( an offcial announcement would see development around that area and I have no monatery interest in Putra Heights for your information)

2. Why only business areas?....why doesn't it goes through some housing area, even I have a house which is near a noisy highway! How can some selfish resident compliant that it will devalue their house.!

Suggestion:
1. I read that Sunway Group is planning a Monorail system in Sunway, why don't ask them to extend all the way up to Putra Heights, covering SS15 business area, SS14/SS18 cutting through to Summit then to USJ 1 all the way up to Putra Heights.

Please don't tell me this routes can't make money??? where its should start I will let you choose but it can end at Kelana Jaya LRT station and make it as a Southern gateway...they do it in London, Paris and Moscow...when are we going to have that mentality?

2. The extended version from Kelana Jaya can cover Kelana Square/MPPJ area, Glenmarie, straight to SS19, USJ 2,3 & 4 (its here where the morning actions begins...1 stations is a MUST here), then to Taipan and cover the other parts of USJ and end at the other side of Putra Heights more towards Shah Alam. ( for future extention and Khir Toyo would love it).

Its funny though that over in UK its so easy for the local government to get things done but over here to many redtapes and little napoleans. I am aware that many will not agree to my views, including you but I sincerely hope they will at least think for a good 10 minutes about having LRT served fully around Subang Jaya / USJ.

Just when, one famous blogger gave 10 reason why he would not support the opposition party, comes this piece of intriguing news better than the transfer of Thierry Henry to Barcelona. The question on my mind would be where the hell is those 6 boxes which contains influential documents that could benefit the party...I guess he sold it at the Ebay.

Ezam you are not better than the lot.....prove me wrong but coming to think about it your party have made a mistake by letting you go....pityyyyy

Here's the news:

Azmin Ali is a schemer who dominates Anwar in PKR: Ezam

Former Parti Keadilan Rakyat Youth chief Ezam Mohd Nor has quit the party and accused his one-time political idol Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of dictatorial politics. He also slammed PKR vice-president “Anwar cannot make firm decisions against Azmin and this is detrimental to the party,” said Ezam, a charismatic politician who was Anwar’s political secretary when they were in Umno. He said his resignation took effect on April 4, which is the anniversary of the party’s formation. He had delayed the announcement because he did not wish to be accused of undermining the party congress and elections last month. Ezam had quit all his party posts in February. Both Ezam and Azmin followed Anwar out of Umno in 1998. Ezam was critical of Anwar’s role as the de facto leader of PKR, whose president is Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. “It is not democratic and smacks of dictatorial politics. Anwar chairs meetings, he appoints people in the party but he is not the president,” said Ezam. It was learnt that PAS had sent its top vice-president Datuk Husam Musa to invite him to join the party and to contest a seat in Kelantan in the general election. Ezam has also received informal approaches from Umno politicians. But, he said, he wants to stay out of electoral politics for now and concentrate on his corruption-busting NGO, Gerak. Anwar, who is in the Middle-East, could not be reached for comment. Azmin, who is attending a meeting in Jakarta, said Ezam was out for cheap publicity. “It is an insult to suggest that Anwar is being controlled by me. “Anwar is an international figure and an experienced politician. No one controls him.”

Wind of Change in UMNO

While browsing, I came along this article which pretty much took my attention. Its about the future about UMNO and their youth leaders, well what's so interesting about them.!? Since PM Badawi took office and disapoint majority of Malaysian in his inept performance while in office its his Deputy and the next echelon leaders of UMNO who preety much attracts me, why?

Creditable websites which write about the state of Malaysia politics have predicted that Khiry would be the 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia, that is after Najib, probably even before that but my conscience feels otherwise, the like up, looks a safe bet for Najib to succeed and Hishamuddin to be his deputy and Khiry to take over from him like how Mahathir force Tun Hussein out of office.

However...a recent article have placed their bet in Hishamuddin to be the Next Mentri Besar of Johor...now if that happens then who will be the next Deputy Prime Minister. I for one, feel that Hishamuddin would contest in the same parlimentary seat which he did before.

Anyway for the benefit of the readers I have attached two interesting article courtesy of tunkuaisha a fellow blogger:

Article No 1:

Khairy and the 'perception' of power

In politics, the term ‘perception’ is important.
In the case of Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, he is perceived to be ‘powerful’ in the government

And this ‘perception’ appears to hold water.

It is said that after the 2004 general elections, Khairy managed to convince Abdullah, who is also Umno president, to permit younger leaders to hold important posts in the central and state leadership.Following this, several younger leaders moved up the ladder. For example in Kedah, Umno Youth information chief Azmi Daim was appointed as a state exco.Whereas former Umno Youth exco Dr Zamry Abd Kadir was appointed as Perak exco and Dr Adham Baba was made deputy higher education minister.

The ‘perception’ among the public, and especially within the Umno circle, is that Khairy was behind the appointments. As far as they are concerned, the 31-year-old Oxford graduate can influence the prime minister. The younger generation in Umno considers this as a meaningful victory for Khairy, particularly for the future leadership of the Youth wing.

In view of this, Khairy will not face any obstacles in winning the Umno Youth chief post uncontested. Even the incumbent, Hishammuddin Hussein, has promised this to his deputy in the coming party polls. The old guards in Umno and the government consider Khairy a ‘threat’ but the younger generation look into him as someone capable of ‘opening doors’ for them to tread along the corridors of power.

The old guards are also concerned about the existence of ‘advisers and strategists’ spearheaded by Khairy on the fourth floor of the Prime Minister’s Office. This group is said to be responsible for all the decisions made by the government. According to a source close to Umno, these ‘perceptions’ are helping Khairy move up the party hierarchy with ease.

The latest ‘perception’ is that he is preparing a list of young leaders to be named as Umno candidates for the coming general elections. “Some of the things happened because of Khairy’s efforts, but there are also those that happened coincidentally, but Khairy gets the name,” said the source.Furthermore, he said, as Abdullah’s son-in-law, Khairy is in the prime minister’s ‘family circle’ and therefore privy to much information unknown to outsiders.“It is because of this, that Khairy is perceived to be more in the know and more matured than the rest, including in administrating the country.

“Whatever Khairy says becomes reality eventually. This has led certain quarters to believe that it is his idea and the prime minister accepted it,” he added.

The source said such ‘perceptions’ are not fair to Abdullah or his son-in-law himself, but this is what makes Khairy attractive to the younger generation. He believes that Khairy’s actions are more towards helping his father-in-law, who does not have a strong support base in Umno compared to Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Najib has successfully built a solid support network among the elites and the grassroots because of his applaudable political career since becoming Umno Youth chief in the early 90s. He was never contested against until he became vice-president, for which he secured the highest number of votes. He is now the party’s deputy president. As a Youth leader, Najib netted the support of the younger generation and by being the son of the late Umno president and prime minister Tun Abdul Razak, he also won over the hearts of the veterans.

On the other hand, Abdullah’s political career appeared to be in a state of limbo until former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad appointed him as deputy prime minister after the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim.

“It is certain that Khairy does not want Abdullah to suffer the same fate as the late Ghafar Baba who was appointed deputy prime minister after Musa Hitam had resigned,” said the source.
In the absence of strong grassroots support and the lack of any effort to achieve this, Ghafar was defeated by Anwar, he added.

“Therefore, it is vital for Khairy to establish a formidable support network in order for Abdullah to continue administering the party and country,” he pointed out.It is because of this, the source said, that some have likened Khairy to a candle “which burns itself to provide light for others.”
He said Khairy has also been likened to the fable hero Hang Nadim who saved Singapore from being destroyed by a swordfish.

“The people were told to form a human wall to defend the island from the attacks of the swordfish but they all perished. Ten-year-old Hang Nadim then suggested to the king to use a banana tree trunk to stop the swordfish.

“The king, who was impressed with the boy’s intelligence, invited him to the palace in order to receive an award. But many of the noblemen did not like Hang Nadim as they were worried that when the boy grows older, he would seize power from the king,” he added.

The king, when informed of this, became enraged, and ordered the boy to be killed. “For certain quarters, this is only a fable, but this is a tale rich in hidden meanings. So Khairy must be cautious. One wrong move and he may suffer the fate of Hang Nadim,” warned the source.
On the same note, there are also those who feel that Khairy is doing all this to realise his own political ambitions. They claim that he has great goals, including becoming prime minister some day. The coming general election will provide a clue as to which ‘perception’ is true.

tunku : just one question, what will khairy position will be in umno if pak lah is not his father in-law? i'm sure he is nothing(zero). he jump onto the ship too early by cutting others. if you know the real khairy is and you love the pary, you'll never allow such person to be a leader in your party.god saves umno. http://tunkuaisha.blogspot.com/

Article No 2:

Hishamuddin Umno's Future Vice President

Hishammuddin gunning for vice-presidency?

Hishammuddin Hussein is expected to step down as Umno Youth chief and allow his deputy Khairy Jamaluddin to take over the post during the coming party elections. This is not a shocking development as Hishammuddin had never contested for the post, it was handed to him.

The question now is what will be his next move?

Malaysiakini has learnt that efforts are underway to ensure that Hishammuddin contests and wins a vice-president’s post. But observers are asking whether he has the support and the strength to do this.

At present, two of the three elected vice-presidents are Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam as well as Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Muhyiddin Yasin. The third, Isa Samad, had his victory nullified after being found guilty of practicing money politics.Efforts to garner support for Hishammuddin will begin at the coming general elections, where he is expected to contest for a state seat.

He will then be appointed as Johor menteri besar as the incumbent Abdul Ghani Othman will not be contesting. As menteri besar, Hishammuddin will also be appointed as the state Umno liaison chairperson. Johor has 26 Umno divisions, the largest number in Malaysia.

This will allow Hishammuddin to secure support from other states as well. His focus will be on the states expected to get new menteris besar after the general elections and with a large number of Umno divisions such as Perak (24), Selangor (22), Pahang (14) and Kedah (15). Sabah (25) and Kelantan (14) can also help.Apart from getting support from Umno Youth, which will be headed by Khairy by then, Hishammuddin can also obtain the backing of the ‘Menteris Besar Club’.Although the ‘club’ does not exist officially, it is an open secret that it is used by menteris besar to garner support, to at least win Umno supreme council seats in the face of challenges from Umno ministers. Each division will send 13 delegates to the Umno general assembly.

This is made up of six office bearers known as G6 and seven others, known as G7, who are elected during the division meeting. The G6 are known to be ardent supporters of the ‘menteris besar’ club. With the support from the G6 and with the help of Khairy, Hishammuddin will also be able to win votes from the G7 delegates.

This will be a ‘win-win’ situation for both Hishammuddin and Khairy. Not only will Hishammuddin become menteri besar, he will also become a party vice-president.Khairy, on the other hand, will get to head Umno Youth and by virtue of that post, also become a vice-president.Khairy, the 31-year-old son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, may have learnt this move from Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.Najib was once the number two in Umno Youth under former deputy premier and current opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar won the post after defeating incumbent Suhaimi Kamaruddin. Following this, Anwar’s policy to ‘Islamisise’ the movement had ruffled the feathers of many Youth excos.Najib and his followers then struck upon the idea to oust Anwar from Umno Youth by campaigning for him contest for vice-presidency. It is certain that Anwar knew of the real motive but at the same time, the moved served in the former’s interest as well.
tunku : it will be a disaster in umno if kj will be the youth head.i guess there are many others who are more seniors than him should be given the chance, but believe he will get the post without challenge, or they will ask someone to challenge kj just to show that he won by contesting it.if this prediction happens, then it will be 95% for sure he'll be the prime minister very soon.and should hishamudin let this happen then he too should be blame.

An Amazing Week

I did mentioned to you in my last posting, that there’s plenty of interesting incidents coming our way the next few months and one remarkable achievement was Real Madrid’s 30th league victory.

Even though football is a team game but at times one brilliant individual can change the outcome of a match and that can be verified by yesterday’s Real Madrid performance against Real Mallorca, though David Beckham had to watch from the sidelines, due to an ankle injury forcing him into a premature departure after 65 minutes, it was him who was instrumental in making Real Madrid a serious title contender towards the second half of the Spanish La League Campaign., ‘‘out of the cold’’ when everyone thought it was over for Beckham (except him) he proved to the entire world, there’s still plenty left to be seen from Mr. David Beckham. This is the third time he has proven the world is wrong to make a conclusion on him and he never fails to amaze me with his persistence!

Yesterday marked the opening of Malaysia’s high profile legal case of Altantuya Shaariibuu’s murder trial. One of the accused is the well oiled, well connected and well known political analyst…. Razak Baginda, all this while I was in the opinion that he had a foreign root but only lately found that he was born and bread in Malaysia. He was a high flyer and was one of the inner circles of Najib Razak, he was what Ed Balls is to Gordon Brown (the future Prime Minister of Great Britain). It will not be too much if I say that he would have landed himself a blue chip portfolio in Najib’s cabinet or at the very least become Najib’s spin doctor.

But it is God who has the last say, I am not here to judge whether he did or not as well as to judge the integrity of the Malaysian judiciary system but what attracted me to write about him is his coolness and composure about the whole episode and the way his wife handling the situation. She and her family members were there to lend ‘‘moral’’ support by donning specially printed t-shirts, in white. She reminds me of a song, sung by the then member of ‘‘The Jackson’s’’ Michael, which goes- I’’ll be There, and she amaze me with her undivided belief.

And finally for today, I remember reading during my teen’s, a book of prophecies by the great Nostradamus. One of his predictions was that of the end of the world, now many of his predictions have become a reality and I am dumbfounded by his astrological ability. In his prediction he foretell that the world will come to an end somewhere in the year 3600 but I was perplexed by what I read in a foreign newspaper which when on to mention that Sir Isaac Newton, predicted that world would come to an end in the year 2060!!! Exactly 3 years after PM Badawi’s vision 2057……!!!!! And exactly 53 years from now…..!!!!!! and how amazingly the press statement cut short of my desire to live for 100 years

Its time to get the book ‘’1000 Places to See Before You Die‘’ by Patricia Schultz

The Beauty of Blogging

Now I never thought I'd find myself writing this but... My name's Navalan Parkunan and I am a blogger.

If, you’re like me, you're not a trainspotter of all things on the web you might not know what a blogger is and might not much fancy the sound of it. Worry not, it's painless. Please read on, though, because this blogging business is something special.

You see, the funny thing about journalism is that you write to a vast number of people but you all too rarely have a correspondance with them - beyond perhaps with someone who asks "Are you that guy who writes on that newslog?" or "Why don’t you get youself a life by staying away from those ridiculous facts of life?"

Which is where Newslog - this weblog - comes in. It's a chance for me to add a thought or an observation from my prospective front view. I may also invite you to listen, watch or read something that's particularly interested me as well as the geneal public at large. It's a chance too for you to add your thought or pose a question.

A good weblog can really change the relationship between author and reader., and the politicians themselves are in on the game too - though preferably I would encourage every Malaysia politician to have a newslog for them to foster a greater relationship between politician and voter.

So welcome to Tanjung Newslog,

My revulsion for maintaing a diary, took a sudden transformation when I first started writing a daily diary of goings on in and around London since June 2003.

With plenty going on in the Malaysian and world of politics in the next few months, not least the new clamor of roof leaking, sports facility complex in England and the change of guards at 10 Downing Street, the prospects for lots of weblog action are pretty good. I think it will be an interesting time, and I hope that makes for an entertaining blog.

But remember - to work, this thing needs your comments too. Come on in, the water's lovely.
